Access, Care, and Stepping Outside Insurance
For many years, I stayed in network because I believed it was the clearest way to make care accessible. That mattered to me, and it still does. Over time, though, I’ve had to face something many people will recognize. Staying in network meant compromising on how much time and attention I could give to my own health and well-being. Supporting my clients and my family has been my priority over the years, and I want that to continue. But juggling everyone’s needs has become less sustainable as time has gone on, and it has taken a toll on my own health. The administrative load, the requirements, and the pace weren’t working for my body or my family. So I’ve been making more space for myself to also receive support and care. I truly encourage my clients, peers, and family members to honor their limits, and I must also honor my own.
Winding Road Counseling will be a fully out-of-network practice as of January 2027. I’ve given notice to the two plans I’m still in network with: I’ll be out of network with TRICARE at the end of November 2026, and with United on December 31, 2026.
What isn’t changing is my commitment to access. Pro bono and sliding fee sessions have always been part of how I practice, balanced with my own family’s health needs. They will continue. They’ll just look different.
What access looks like now
A sliding fee scale. Individual sessions range from $135 to $215, across three tiers: Redistribution, Solidarity, and Accessible.
Some pro bono sessions. I will have a limited number of pro bono spots monthly. Please ask me directly if you would like to be considered for this. I will do my best to either accomodate or create a timeline for us to revisit that possibility.
Out-of-network reimbursement. I will provider superbills at the end of each session. I also partner with Thrizer for submission of superbills directly to insurance. More information on that is available here.
Choosing your rate
To choose a rate, you're invited to use my Sliding Scale Self-Assessment. It asks you to reflect on your financial resources, systemic barriers, and levels of privilege, and then choose the rate that is most possible for you. Your answers aren't seen by me and are automatically deleted.
The estimator is adapted with gratitude from Jericho Feng's sliding scale estimator and influenced by Kenya Crawford, Britt Hawthorne, and Rachel Boggan owner of Properties of Light. It's one way I'm working to push back against classism and support sustainable access to care in our community.

Questions
I'm still learning what sustainable, accessible care can look like, for my clients and for me. If cost is a barrier, or you have questions about fees or what this means for your care, please reach out to me directly via email at jennifer@windingroadcounseling.com . I'd much rather have that conversation than have anyone go without support.
